A testament to its excellence, the Oitavos Dunes was the first golf course in Europe to receive Audubon Gold Certification, making it a must-visit course during your golfing holiday to Portugal.

Troia Golf

You might have to make a short ferry crossing from Setubal to the Peninsula of Troia to reach Troia Golf, but the effort is worth it. Designed by Robert Trent Jones Senior in 1980, the course is situated between the Atlantic Ocean, the Sado Estuary and the Serra da Arrabida. Featuring RTJ Sr’s signature use of bunkering, raised greens and doglegs, Troia Golf offers a unique golfing experience. The key to scoring well on this course lies in selecting the correct tee box, calling for players to be strategic at every hole.

Praia D’El Rey Golf & Beach Resort

An hour north west of Lisbon, Praia D’El Rey lies on the Costa de Prata and is one of the best golf courses in Portugal. Opening in 1997, this course is arranged into two loops of nine holes, with a par of 72. From lush vegetation, sand dunes and spectacular coastlines, Praia D’El Rey is a course of great variety. Offering incredible views of the Atlantic Ocean and the Berlenga Islands, bunkers and hazards have been strategically placed to make players think through each hole.

Penha Longa Golf Resort

Part of the Sintra Cascais Nature Park. Penha Longa Golf Resort is set within the southern foothills and enjoys a landscape of lush valleys and rocky outcrops. Although there are two courses at Penha Longa, the championship standard Atlantico deserves attention during your golfing holiday. A testing course in any condition, Penha Longa is the perfect option for those looking to be challenged. There is no better example of this than that of the 1999 Estoril Open. Jean-Francois Remesy, the title winner, was the only player under par, managed to do so by just two shots. Penha Longa is not a course for the cautious.

Golf Quinta do Peru

One of the most exclusive and prestigious courses in the Azeitao Region, Quinta do Peru is a must-visit course for any golfing holiday in Portugal. Framed by the Arrabida Mountains, the course is located south of Lisbon between Sesimbra and Setubal. Extending more than 300 acres, Quinta do Peru features bold bunkering and threatening water hazards which require thoughtful play. Routed across a high undulating plateau, golfers should not expect to play their handicap during the first attempt.

Aroeira Golf Resort

Despite only being 20km to the south of Lisbon, Aroeira Golf Resort is a natural haven. Situated in a 900-acre resort located within a preservation area, it benefits a temperate micro-climate. Offering year-round play on its two excellent courses, Aroeira Golf Resort is the ultimate destination. Opening in 1997, Aroeira 1 was designed by Frank Pennink and has a traditional par of 72. Players will note the absence of artificial hazards, with the course making full use of the dense pine forest which it is routed through. A true tribute to the spectacular scenery, Aroeira will leave players with a memorable experience.
