Originally established as the Barcelona Golf Club in 1912, Real Club de Golf El Prat moved to new facilities in El Prat de Llobregat in 1954. 30 minutes away from Barcelona, the club is now located on the BonVilar estate beside the Sant Llorenc del Munt I l’Obac Natural Park. Designed by Greg Norman, the club boasts two 18-hole layouts in addition to a 9-hole practice course. Out of all the courses, it is ‘The Open’ which should get your full attention. Measuring over 7,300 yards from the back tee, this par 72 course features wide tree-lined fairways with strategic bunkering.
The Blue at Real Club de Golf El Prat
Located at the prestigious Real Club de Golf El Prat, ‘The Blue’ is known as one of the top golf clubs in Spain. Like ‘The Open’, this course is also designed by Greg Norman, with dramatic bunkering threatening play. However, unlike its sister course, ‘The Blue’ is much more open than ‘The Open’, with the tall pine trees only featuring on a handful of holes. Despite this, players are advised to focus on precision rather than hard hits as many of the holes can be unforgiving.
Club de Golf Bonmont Terres Noves
Combining views of the Mediterranean Sea and the breath-taking Llaberia, Club de Golf Bonmont Terres Noves is situated in south-west Tarragon, a few miles inland from Miami Playa. Part of a residential complex, the course is routed through undulating terrain, featuring dramatic ravines in places. Designed by the iconic Robert Trent Jones Jnr in 1990, Bonmont is laid out in two sets of nine, with each set using the classic formation of two par threes, two par fives and five par fours. As typical of a Robert Trent Jones Jnr design, the course features over 90 bunkers, all strategically placed to test even the most experienced golfer.
The Hills at Lumine Mediterranea Golf Club
The Lumine Mediterranea Beach & Golf Community is in Tarragona, close to the popular resort of Salou. Set in a coastal bird sanctuary, the complex offers two championship 18-hole courses and one 9-hole route in an authentic, natural setting. Recently used by elite golfing groups from the Austrian and Finnish Golf Federations for winter training, ‘The Hills’ is the highest-ranking golf course on the complex. Stretching 6,334m through olive and carob tree plantations, golfers are treated to incredible views of the sea at the last hole. ‘The Hills’ features extremely long fairways lined with white pines as well as a couple of water hazards to help develop your game.
Club de Golf de Barcelona
Created by Jose Maria Olazabal in 1990, Club de Golf de Barcelona is laid out on the hilly terrain of the Penedes wine region. Close to Masia Beach, the club offers incredible views of the Montserrat Mountains in addition to its excellent facilities. The ‘Masia Course’ is Golf Barcelona’s 18-hole par 72 course and is known as one of the most challenging golf courses in Spain. Stretching 6.271 metres, its variety has earned it an international reputation leading to it hosting numerous competitions including the Spanish Professional Championship in 1991 and the Peugeot’s Tour of Spain in 2003 and 2005.
The Lakes at Lumine Mediterranea Golf Club
The second of two championship 18-hole golf courses at the Lumine Mediterranea Beach and Golf Community, ‘The Lakes’ combines technical perfection with a peaceful setting. Routed around the Soquia Makor wetlands, water hazards play an integral part on this course. Measuring 6,300m in length, ‘The Lakes’ has a par of 71 and is a challenge for players of all abilities. The 18th hole is this courses signature hole, including a significant water hazard, a large sandy waste area and three protective bunkers to be negotiated before reaching the home green.
