Want to play golf as well as watching Open Championship? There are plenty of spectacular golf courses in Antrim and the surrounding areas. Here are just some of our favourites:

Royal County Down Golf Club

Located in Newcastle, County Down. Royal County Down Golf Club was founded in 1889 and is one of the oldest golf clubs on the entire island of Ireland. It has two different 18 hole courses set against the thrilling background of the mountains of Mourne. The club hosted the Irish Open in 2015 and was named by Rory McIlroy as his favorite course in the world.

Portstewart Golf Club

Host of the 2017 Irish Open Portstewart Golf Club was founded in 1894. It consists of three different 18 hole courses and is the closest to Royal Portrush at only a 10min transfer away. Book early if you want to golf here to avoid disappointment as this will be in high demand during The Open week.

Lough Erne Golf Resort

As one of the finest golf resorts in Ireland, Lough Erne has an amazing 36 hole golf experience split across two different championship courses. It was designed by 6 time major winner Sir Nick Faldo and offers beautiful views of Castle Hume Lough & Lough Erne. It is situated at just over a two hour transfer away from Royal Portrush, but it simply had to be included on this list.

Castlerock Golf Club

Situated on the causeway coast and nestled among the sand dunes this course is very similar to Royal Portrush being only 20 minutes away by transfer. It was designed by Ben Sayers back in 1908 when it went from a 7 to 18 hole course. Later in the 1930’s Harry Colt who helped design Royal Portrush was involved in a redesign of the course.

Malone Golf Club

Situated in Belfast it is one of the best parkland golf courses in all of Ireland. With its 27 holes and location beside a 20 acre lake there is no better place to pick up your clubs and enjoy a few rounds. It is a 1hr 20min transfer away from Royal Portrush.

Francesco Molinari

Francesco Molinari became Italy’s first major winner, winning the 147th Open Championship with bogey-free 69 at Carnoustie. The Italian is having the best season of his career, previously winning the 2018 BMW PGA Championship.

Jordan Spieth

Hosted at The Royal Birkdale in England, Jordan Speith claimed the victory at the 146th Open in 2017. Through claiming his victory, Speith had won the Masters Tournament, the US Open and The Open crowns by the age of 23.

Padraig Harrington

Padraig Harrington has set numerous European records during the Open. Winner of the 2007 Championship, he was the first European in eight years to win a Major Championship. In the following year at Royal Birkdale, Harrington then became the first European to retain his title since James Braid in 1906.

Royal Portrush Golf Club

The Dunluce Course at Royal Portrush Golf Club famously played host to The Open back in 1951. The course is one of the most renowned in the world and it consists of amazing sea views along with expansive sand dunes that go as far as the eye can see.

The rugged terrain ensures that there should be some highly entertaining golf on show from some of the worlds best when they roll into town. The course originally designed by Harry Colt will feature two new holes to add further challenge and excitement to this spectacle.

The Open Championship

The Open is one of the four major championships in golf. It is the eldest of the them and this year’s tournament is the 148th in its history. The tournament is always held on British soil usually in Scotland or England but this year for the first time since 1951 it will be held in Royal Portrush Golf Club in Northern Ireland.

Following last year’s tournament win by the Italian Francesco Molinari this year’s purse will be just over $10 million dollars. It is expected that there will be a star studded line up of golfers on show, so this is truly one occasion that you don’t want to miss.
