The Best Golf Courses Near Turnberry

Barberton Golf Club

Established in 1893, Baberton Golf Club is situated in the village of Juniper Green, on the west side of Edinburgh. Advancing from the original 9-hole layout designed by two-time Open champion Willie Park Jnr, the current 18-hole course stretches 6,129 yards and plays to a par of 69. Routed over undulating terrain, the courses signature hole is the 391-yard, par four 13th known as ‘The Gap’. Nestled between the Quarry and the Wilderness Woods, an accurate shot up-hill is required to overcome a two-tiered green. Claiming to be the birthplace of steel-shafted clubs, the original equipment and patents can be viewed in the clubhouse, helping to re-enforce Baberton Golf Club’s place in golf history.

Bruntsfield Links Golfing Society

The fourth oldest golf club in the world, Bruntsfield Links Golfing Society was founded in 1761 and is one of Scotland’s most prestigious clubs. Selected as a Qualifying Venue for the Open Championship from 2011 to 2015, the original layout was designed by Willie Park Jnr, with later modifications made by Dr Alister MacKenzie and James Braid. More recently, the course has undergone a £1 million re-development with bunkers repositioned to reflect modern equipment and a new signature Par 3 16th Hole being added.

Murrayfield Golf Club

Previously located half a mile east of its present position, Murrayfield Golf Club was established in 1896. Offering fabulous views of Edinburgh, East Lothian and Fife, the course is parkland/heathland in nature and is an enjoyable experience for all golfers. Stretching 5,781 yards from the back tees, the course is played to a par of 70 and features 2 part fives and one par four in excess of 400 yards. Presenting numerous memorable holes, players should be aware of the uphill 8 known as the ‘Law Park’ and the right dog-legged 9th, known as the ‘Forth View’.

Dalmahoy Hotel & Country Club

Situated in 1000 acres of parkland, the Dalmahoy Hotel & Country Club is one Scotland’s top golfing destinations. Boasting spectacular views of Edinburgh Castle and the Forth Bridge, the golf resort features two 18-hole golf courses that are suitable for golfers of all abilities. The previous host to the Scottish Seniors Open and Solheim Cup, the ‘East Course’ was designed by the golf architect James Braid to Championship standards. In comparison, the ‘West Course’ features narrow fairways and compact greens to test accuracy and precision. A unique golf resort that combines Scottish history with golfing excellence, the Dalmahoy Hotel & Country Club is a must-visit whilst stay in Edinburgh for a golf holiday.

Ratho Park Golf Club

Evolved from the New Century Golf Club and a merger with the Corstorphine Golf Club, Ratho Park Golf Club is located to the west of Edinburgh, within the estate of Ratho Park. One of the best parkland courses in Scotland, the club is bordered on two sides by the Union Canal and surrounded by trees. Measuring 5,963 yards, the 18-hole layout provides a compact test within the golf clubs calming setting. In addition to its course, Ratho Park Golf Club boasts a practice range and Pro shop, as well as a spectacular clubhouse, which is a Grade A listed manor house.

Royal Burgess Golfing Society

One Scotland’s best parkland golf courses, Royal Burgess Golfing Society is a must-play whilst staying in Edinburgh for a golf holiday. Featuring tree-lined fairways and strategically placed bunkers, the course is a challenge for all players. Originally designed by Tom Morris and Willie Park Jnr, the layout was later redesigned in the 1920s by James Braid. Boasting a spectacular history of hosting both amateur and professional golf tournaments, the club became the first to bring a top professional golf tournament to Edinburgh, hosting the Penfold-Swallow in 1956. Whilst all holes provide a memorable golf experience, it is the 11th that is truly unique. Measuring 348 yards, the hole is a downhill par 4 dogleg which features an open cundie crossed by a beautiful stone bridge.
