The Best Golf Courses Near Girona
Club Golf d’Aro mas Nou
Overlooking the resort of Platja d’Aro, Club Golf d’Aro mas Nou is located in the Gavarres Mountains. Boasting enviable views of the Costa Brava coastline, D’Aro’s layout stretches 6,800 yards and plays to a par of 72. Surrounded by pine, cork oak and olive trees, the course covers extremely varied terrain, navigating deep ravines and lateral water. A challenging course that is suitable for players of all abilities, Golf d’Aro is a must-visit whilst visiting the area.
Emporda Golf
Designed by the Texan golf course architect Robert von Haage, Emporda Golf offers excellent golf facilities within a luxury resort. The club’s 36 holes are arranged into two primary courses, the ‘Links’ and the ‘Forest’, both with unique characteristics. Whilst the ‘Links’ course combines bunkers, dunes and lakes, the ‘Forest’ course provides golfers with a peaceful retreat and is routed through a traditional Mediterranean pine forest. For those who want to experience both courses, it is also possible to play the ‘Top 10 PGA Von Hagge tour course’ which combines the best holes from both primary courses.
Fontanals Golf
Opened in 1994, Fontanals Golf is situated near the border with Andorra and France at an altitude of 3,000 feet above sea level. Designed by Ramon Espinosa, the course measures 7,100 yards over undulating parkland terrain. Featuring wide fairways and large greens, Espinosa features water hazards on many of its holes including traditional farming irrigation systems. In addition, players are challenged by the size of the holes, with not one of its four par three holes less than 180 yards.
Golf Costa Brava
Designed in 1968 by Hamilton Stutt & Co, Golf Costa Brava boats 27 holes with distinct characteristics. Combining technical play with a relaxed atmosphere, the holes are arranged in three loops of 9, allowing players to create their own experience. Surrounded by pine and cork oak forests, the flat terrain of Golf Costa Brava makes it suitable for players of all ages and abilities.
Golf de Pals
Used by the European PGA as one of the of their final qualifying schools, Golf de Pals is located right on the Mediterranean coastline, next to Playa de Pals beach. Host to the 1972 Spanish Open, the course was designed by Fred Hawtree in 1966. Routed through a thick forest of umbrella pine trees, the flat, free draining sandy soil prevents the narrow fairways from becoming waterlogged in the occasional downpour.
Torremirona Golf Club
Nestled between the foothills of the Pyrenees and the Mediterranean waters of the Gulf of Roses, Torremirona Golf Club is one of the hidden gems of the Costa Brava. Ideal for both technical golfers and those looking for relaxed holiday golf, the course was designed by Eugenio Aguado and Jordi Soler. Featuring wide fairways and water hazards, the club also boasts a fully equipped sports centre which has been used for pre-season training by several top professional clubs.
